Make it Monday: Valentine’s Day Inspiration

I fell in love (ha ha, see what I did there?) with this Valentine fabric bundle I purchased from the ad: FAT QUARTER SHOP. They have the best selection of bundles and I purchase nearly all of my fabric online. Their selection varies from year to year, so this particular one might not be available, but this is a similar one HERE. Look for bundles that have a few different colors and then mix and match to your heart’s content. (Ha ha! Okay, okay, I’ll see myself out.)

Courtney’s lovely Valentine Skirt was made with the Twinkle Twirl Skirt PDF pattern. The pattern is quick to sew and you can choose fabrics and trims.

Valentines Day Doll Clothes- Fun Fabrics!

Kira’s simple skirt was made with a striped type print which was in the same fat quarter bundle as the prints on Courtney’s skirt above. It’s a quick sew when you use the Everything Nice overskirt pattern. Find it in the Sugar n Spice pattern bundle.

Easy Sewing Project for Valentine’s Day: Four Square Skirt by Oh Sew Kat!

I used packaged bias tape (double fold) for Corrine’s waistband. It speeds up my sewing, but also gives a fun contrast design element. Corrine is wearing a turtleneck shirt made with the Jumping Jack 3 in 1 pattern with her skirt.

I’ve been working on my knitting skills- and made this pretty, pink cape from a pattern on Ravelry. It’s the perfect accent for Corrine’s Valentine’s Day outfit.

Four Season Skirt Pattern Hack: Patchwork Twirl Skirt

This tutorial assumes you understand the basic skirt construction detailed in the Four Season Skirt pattern. Find the free Four Season Skirt pattern here in 3 sizes:

Make a Patchwork Twirl Skirt for your Doll

1. Choose 2 or 4 fabrics to make your skirt.  Cut four pieces total, 5 x 8 inches each.   With right sides together (RST), stitch the short edges together, to make one long piece 5 x 30 inches.  (This is for the 18 inch doll size.  To adapt this for other sizes, divide the total skirt piece measurement by four, then add 1/2 inch to each piece for the seam allowances). Attach the skirt to the waistband as stated in the pattern directions.
2. Add a fun contrasting hem using 1/2 inch double fold bias tape! You can find so many neat bias trims online now, or you can use AD: THIS TOOL to make your own. Sew up the back seam, and then add the bias tape to the hem. Ta da!! (If you prefer flat construction, you can add your bias trim to the skirt before seaming up the back, but sometimes bias trim makes a little bulkier join.)

Choose any fabrics you like to change up the look! This is a great project for your small scraps too!

Valentine’s Day Sewing for American Girl Dolls- patterns by Oh Sew Kat!

The Sugar n Spice and Everything Nice pattern includes a simple dress and pinafore/jumper. The pinafore makes a great stand alone dress as well. Here I kept it short, but it’s fun to make longer versions like in THIS POST. Layer the pinafore over a turtleneck, like the one included in the Jumping Jack pattern, or a tee or peasant top. Add some fun tights (these pink and red ones were actually from a Bitty Baby set by American Girl® called Sweetheart Outfit) and some cozy boots to complete the look.

Bow Tie Skirt for 18 inch Dolls

Follow these simple instructions to modify the Everything Nice Overskirt (Included with the Sugar n Spice and Everything Nice Pattern bundle) to close it with a pretty bow at the waist.

Make the Sugar n Spice Overskirt Close with a Pretty Tie

You will need the Sugar n Spice and Everything Nice bundle pattern. The overskirt is part of the accessories set.

1. Cut your skirt and waistband pieces according to the pattern instructions. I actually made my skirt more full at 33 inches.
2. Hem and gather the skirt, including the short edges.
3. Fold in each short end of the waistband 1/4th inch and press, then stitch.
4. With right sides together, press waistband in half long ways.
5. Open the waistband, and find the center. Also find the center of your 36 inch piece of ribbon.
6. Decide if you want the skirt to close in the center or off to one side and place your ribbon in the waistband accordingly. Optional: Stitch some or all of the ribbon near the fold, to the back of the waistband piece so the ribbon will not come out during play. If you want to be able to tie it both in the center and to the side, you will need to leave the ribbon unattached so it can slide. In that case, put the ribbon inside, and use clips or pins to hold it in place and out of the way as you attach your waistband.
7. Press the waistband closed again and complete the skirt as directed. The ribbon will be hidden in the waistband but the skirt will close with a cute bow.
8. Use the skirt on its own, or over a dress frontwards or backwards.
