Make a Mix and Match 80s Style Wardrobe for your Courtney Moore™ American Girl® Doll

As an 80s gal myself, I am pretty excited about Courtney and all her fun things. Even though I was in college, I still loved the Care Bears (I also had a six year old sister at the time, LOL) and my mom and I tracked down some Cabbage Patch Kids. I didn’t hear about American Girl® until I had children of my own- I guess that is what happened in the times before the internet!

Before I even saw her collection, I started to look at 80s fashions and colors and came up with a few pieces to mix and match for her as soon as I brought her home.

Cabbage Patch Kids. American Girl Dolls. Care Bears. Strawberry Shortcake! Give your doll an 80s wardrobe to match with simple to sew Oh Sew Kat! PDF sewing patterns. Find us on Etsy too!

Courtney needs new 80s themed clothing!

I used 3 patterns and made 5 pieces for my Courtney’s new Mix and Match wardrobe. Because both tops are reversible, I get two shirts in one. I tried to pick fabrics that also coordinate with the tights, purple tank top, and jean skirt that she came dressed in (called her “Meet” outfit) so I would have even more wardrobe options.

I used the Picnic Play Top, Sandbox Shorts, and the Four Season Skirt. The Four Season Skirt pattern is a free gift when you subscribe to my email newsletter. You can find it HERE. Click the links below to see each tutorial. The purple skirt is the Four Season Skirt without any changes to the pattern.

These adorable outfits were made as a special order for a good friend to give as a gift.  She gave me a price range, and let me decide what I would make.  I love to sew that way!  I don’t know the child, so I thought a few pieces that mixed and matched together in different ways might be a good place to start. These cute fabrics are from the AD: Fat Quarter Shop. Search for zoology minis.

My favorite pattern for all dolls, but especially for the Wellie Wishers, is the Party Time Peasant Dress.  This dress lets me use three different, cute fabrics at once and is now available in 5 doll sizes!

I wanted to make two tops and two bottoms.  The tops I chose are the Playtime Peasant Top (purple), the reversible Popsicle Top (pink stripes and puppies).

The two bottoms I decided on are the Four Season Skirt, and Sandbox Shorts with contrasting pockets.  You can find the Four Season Skirt pattern for FREE right here.

Between these four pieces, the lucky, little girl can make 6 different outfits!  Because I used fat quarters, I still have enough of each color that I could make another set.  Inexpensive fat quarter bundles from Walmart and other craft stores like Hobby Lobby are great for these kinds of projects! You can make all of these pieces for under $10! Read more how I do this in THIS POST.

Willa’s outfit looks like a dress, but it’s actually a skirt and top. The Popsicle Top reverses to the pink striped fabric. I used the print fabric as the Four Season Skirt waistband.

Ashlynne is wearing the Popsicle Top with the striped side out. The pockets of the shorts are also lined with the striped fabric. Use this TUTORIAL to put the patch pockets on the inside of the short. Find the Sandbox Shorts pattern HERE.

Camille’s puppy dress was made with the Party Time Peasant Dress pattern. Find the Party Time Peasant Dress pattern HERE. I love this pattern for mixing and matching my fabrics. Even though the dress doesn’t get worn with other pieces, it’s super cute as a stand alone item as well.

I hope the little girl enjoys her new doll clothes! I had fun making them for her!
