First, you need the Oh Sew Kat! Bloomer Buddies pattern. It’s available in three sizes where Oh Sew Kat! patterns are sold.  Print out the pieces for the dress with short sleeves.

You will need to make a few minor adjustments to the pattern pieces.  You may be able to lengthen the pieces on the original printout, or you may need to cut it out and then tape it to a fresh sheet of paper first, depending on the size doll you are sewing for.

Using the short sleeve pattern piece, and THIS TUTORIAL, add 3 1/2 inches to the length of the sleeve. Measure down from the side edge, not the center, and draw your new sleeve hem edge straight across, not curved.  For this 18 inch doll nightgown, I lengthened my sleeve by 3 1/2 inches, and used a 3/8th hem/elastic casing.  You will need 4 inches of 1/4th inch elastic for the wrist.

Add 1 inch to the front and back pieces length, below the dress length line to make a floor length nightgown.

Cut a ruffle so the nightgown will reach the floor.  I cut mine at 3 inches by 44 inches.  It can be anywhere from 33-44 inches long, depending how full you want your ruffle.

Follow the pattern directions as written, adding 4 inches of 1/4th inch elastic into the sleeve hem when you hem it, and gathering and attaching the ruffle to the hem before you stitch up the back.  It’s easier to hem the ruffle before you attach it to the nightgown.

You will need to make a few minor adjustments to the pattern pieces.  You may be able to lengthen the pieces on the original printout, or you may need to cut it out and then tape it to a fresh sheet of paper first, depending on the size doll you are sewing for.

Using the short sleeve pattern piece, and THIS TUTORIAL, you will need to lengthen the sleeve pattern piece to make it a long sleeve.   Measure down from the side edge, not the center, and draw your new sleeve hem edge straight across, not curved.  For this 18 inch doll nightgown, I lengthened my sleeve by 3 1/2 inches, and used a 3/8th hem/elastic casing.  I used 4 inches of elastic for the wrist.

Sew the dress as directed by the pattern. Choose a snuggly flannel or pretty cotton for your nightgown.  The nightgown Grace is wearing below, is the same dress length as the dress length pattern lines.

Another option is to add a pretty ruffle to the bottom of the dress length.  Here I used a piece of a jelly roll, that was 2 1/2 x 40 inches long. A jelly roll is a quilting fabric precut of 20-45 2 1/2 inch strips like this one Ad:  https://amzn.to/2VNxmED.  I keep a few on hand to use as precut dress and skirt ruffles.  I used one end of the same strip to cut the yoke.  Any size ruffle will do; you can choose how long you want your doll’s nightgown to be.

First, you will need the pattern!  Find the pattern here in my Etsy shop.

Bodice:

  1. Fold your fabric in half.  Decide how wide you want your center placket and place the bodice front piece that distance from the fold.  My placket is about 1/2 inch wide, and the pattern piece is placed 1/2 inch from the fold. Cut one.  *Note:  On this sample, I cut the neckline about 1/4 inch higher than the pattern piece.  Be sure to cut the lining to match this exactly if you want to do this too. I did not make any changes to the back bodice piece.
  2. Cut an additional bodice front and two bodice backs as directed by the pattern for the lining.  Do not add the extra width to this front.
  3. On the wider front, fold the fabric wrong sides together.  Stitch a seam at 1/2 inch (the measurement from step 1) down the middle of the piece, from the neckline to waist.  Open out the placket and press it flat.
  4. If you want to add trim or lace to your placket, put it under the edges, then top stitch. Otherwise, just top stitch each edge down.
  5. Assemble the bodice as the pattern directs.

Sleeves:

  1. Use the same sleeve as the pattern you are using.  (always).  Measure down your doll’s arm and decide where you want the finished length. Then add 1/4 th inch and cut your new sleeve.  *Tip:  Print and cut an extra page that has the sleeve piece on it. Ignore the other things on the page, and measure and draw out your long sleeve and cut it out. You will now have it to use again!  My measurement was 1 5/8th inch longer, measured at the outside edge of the pattern piece (not the center).  Just extend the lines of the sleeve down to this new hemline.
  2.  To add a ruffle to your sleeve hem, cut two additional strips.   I cut mine 1 1/2 x 10 inches.  Hem one long edge of each one. Gather the unhemmed long edge and attach it, right sides together, to the bottom of the sleeve.  If you have trim, baste it on the sleeve piece before you attach the ruffle, so it is sandwiched in between.
  3. Top stitch.
  4. Follow the pattern directions to attach the sleeves.

Skirt:

  1. Cut the skirt to 7 inches by 28 inches and the ruffle ruffle 3 1/2 x 36 to make your gown look like mine.  Note:  I normally cut the skirt for this pattern at 33-36 inches because I like them full, but this time, I wanted to conserve my expensive trim, so I went with 28 inches.  The ruffle will make up for the fullness.  To make the gown a little closer to floor length, use 7 1/2 x 33 inches for the skirt and 3 3/4 x 44 inches for the ruffle.
  2. Zigzag or serge one long edge of the ruffle. Press up 1/4th inch and stitch hem in place.
  3. Baste optional piping or trim to the raw, bottom edge of the skirt. Turn to right side. Do not top stitch until after you attach the ruffle.  Gather and attach the skirt as directed in the pattern.  Top stitch at the bodice.
  4. Gather and attach the ruffle. Topstitch.

Finishing:

  1. Continue with the pattern directions to finish the back edge and attach the hook and loop tape.
  2. Add buttons or bows to your placket for a final touch.
