Make a Dress with the Popsicle Top Pattern from Oh Sew Kat!

  • Cut out the Popsicle Top Pattern according to the directions.
  • Cut a skirt piece, 25 inches by 4.5 inches. If you want a fuller skirt, cut it longer than 25 inches.
  • Assemble the Popsicle Top according to the directions. Do not sew the back edge (where the hook and loop tape will go- this also makes it super easy to flip right side out!). Do not sew the hem or add trim.
  • Hem the bottom long edge of the skirt, and gather the top edge.
  • With right sides together, pin the gathered skirt to the hem of the Popsicle Top (treat both layers of the top as one layer), and sew. Top stitch from the front (pretty side of fabric).
  • Finish the back edges in one long seam, and fold in 1/4 inch on each side, press. Add hook and loop tape and continue the seam down to the hem of the dress to catch the pressed in edge.
  • Add tights or leggings and high top reeboks to complete the look! It also looks great with a denim jacket over top.

Step it Up Series: Halloween Costume Parade: How to Make an Elsa Costume for Your Dolls with this Easy Pattern Hack

This year, I challenged myself to create a new, Halloween costume using only my own patterns.  I brainstormed a list, which you can find at the end of this post, of some ways to take the patterns I already have, and create a new look with just a few tweaks.  I’m delighted with the results!! Presenting….Elsa and Little Elsa (otherwise known as Lanie and Camille).  If someone in your house still has Frozen Fever… well, let her dolls get into the act too with this fun Halloween costume.

Use basic sewing patterns to make a doll sized Halloween Costume

I used the POPSICLE TOP pattern, in a sparky blue fabric. I used the same fabric as the skirt for the inside of the top…the best part is, after Halloween, my dolls have a versatile separate to add to their closet, because I did not sew it to the skirt.  I glued on some craft show crystal chains, like these, because there are not any small children in my house any more. Be sure to trim your doll outfits in age appropriate trims.

Elsa from Frozen Inspired Halloween Costume for Dolls

The long skirts are made from the SIXTH GRADE SKIRT pattern.  I taped each pattern piece to a new sheet of copy paper, and made a new hemline (four inches down for Wellies and 5 1/2 inches down for the 18 inch girls).  Using my ruler, I just extended the lines to create new pieces.  I will say, this worked perfectly for the WellieWishers.  The geometry is a little off for the bigger girls, as the skirt got proportionally wider the farther down I went.  If I were going to make this again, I’d take a good piece out from the middle, and possibly the side fronts so it didn’t flare out quite so wide.

I wanted the dress to shimmer, but didn’t want to mess with satin fabrics (I’m kind of lazy that way!).  I cut my pieces from regular Kona cotton…and cut squares of glitter tulle (off the bolt from Joann’s) that were larger than my pieces.  I lay my tulle over each of my skirt pieces, and treated them as a single layer.  With right sides together, I sewed the side seams, and then I simply trimmed the seam allowances, which included the excess tulle and created a beautiful effect that is completely sewn into the skirt.  The cape is simply a hemmed rectangle of snowflake sheer fabric, and the snowflakes are from a scrapbooking sticker set like these. Not a permanent solution to be sure, but definitely will give your Ice Queen give a nice “cool” effect. The crown was from a limited edition holiday outfit from American Girl®.  These are the patterns I used:

Everything Nice for Animators

My newest release, Sugar n Spice and Everything Nice is now available for Animators dolls.  These cutie princesses are perfect for your girl to dress and redress- and this pattern will help!

You can download the pattern bundle here on Etsy.  Both the dress pattern and accessory pattern are also sold separately, but they are currently exclusively available on etsy.com.

I know I couldn’t afford every princess doll that came along when my Molly was five…so that is where my sewing machine came in.  My daughter’s first real doll was named Dorothy.  When Molly was into Cinderella….Dorothy got a Cinderella dress.  A month later when the princess of the week was Belle, in came the yellow organza.  I bought some (honest answer) and I made some…but Dorothy stayed the same through it all. One doll- with a whole closet full of princess dresses….just waiting for her little self to decide who she would be that day.

The Animators line of dolls by Disney don’t necessarily break our bankrolls like some of the other dolls we sew for in our house…but space can become an issue and I created this pattern to give you a basic canvas to work with…and some basic accessories to try to create any character you can think of.  Does she like the Little Mermaid?  Make her a blue skirt and corset for her town dress…add a white peplum to a pink dress for another look…you can really have fun with this one!! Meet Camille!! At 14.5 inches tall, she is about the same height as my Hearts for Hearts doll.  She has a thicker body and a 6 inch waist.  Her legs are much thicker as well.  She’s a good sport! She spent the day trying on all of the clothes I have on hand for the Hearts for Hearts dolls.  They fit with some good, but mixed results.

Pants:  any loose fitting pants work, but tight pants (like the jean shorts the H4H came in) won’t go up over her hips- too small.

The Popsicle Top fits.  It sits a little higher on her waist.  You can buy the pattern here in my etsy shop.

The Four Season Skirt fits if I used the 1/8 inch elastic.  The ones that I made with 1/4 inch elastic work great for the Hearts for Hearts, but were just too tight to get on the Welliewisher.  I still think adding 1/2 inch to the two fabric pieces and using 1/8 inch elastic makes the fit a little better and it’s certainly easier to get it on and off the doll.  The dolls are made for children to play with, and dressing them up is part of the fun!  The length is perfect.   The updated version for Wellie Wishers™ is now included in my email sign up form. Find the link here.

DIY Doll Clothes Sewing Patterns for Welliewishers™

Easy Sewing Patterns for Wellie Wishers™ 14.5 inch dolls by American Girl®

Everyone is really excited about the arrival of the Welliewisher™ dolls from American Girl ®.  Including me! Their cute faces are hard to resist.  I do live close enough to drive to an American Girl store, so I will be bringing someone home this Saturday!! In the meantime, how about a free pattern to get you started sewing for your Wellies?  Yes, I will be resizing my current pattern catalog to fit these cute, new dolls.  And the good news is, I have three currently in testing, so you may not have to wait too terribly long!

Find easy sewing patterns for 14.5 inch dolls like Wellie Wishers™ at Oh Sew Kat!

I published the Four Season Skirt for Hearts for Hearts and Les Cheries dolls in February.  I can confirm the the Welliewisher dolls also have approximately a six inch waist. (Some H4H actually have a waist that is a little smaller than 6 inches)  This pattern should fit them too- it will need a little tweaking- because even though the waist measurement is the same, Wellie Wishers have thicker legs and bigger hips.  Maybe add an inch or so to each fabric piece and use 1/8 inch elastic only (easier to slip on and off!) but it’s a great way to get started on a few wardrobe changes for your new Welliewisher dolls. And you can make this cute top for Wellies too!

Find a free skirt sewing pattern for 14 inch Hearts for Hearts Dolls by Oh Sew Kat! Easy to sew with full color photos, these tutorials are quick and fun.

The Popsicle Top pattern will also fit the Welliewisher ® dolls.  As is, it looks like a crop top, but it does fit. You can easily make it longer or add a thicker lace to the bottom.  I don’t have a Wellies doll myself just yet, so maybe stitch it up with your less favorite fabric first 🙂  I will update this post when I have a doll in my hand and can share some photos with you.  In the meantime, start sewing for your Wellies today and share your creations with #ohsewkat!
