This spring I stitched up a donation for a local church’s St Brigid’s Day celebration. I chose the Party Time Peasant Dress and made one with short and one with long sleeves. This is my go- to dress for quick, easy and cute!
I wanted to make a single outfit, with a St Patrick’s Day theme, that could also be used for other seasons for extra doll play. I loved how these came out!
Once the under dress was done, I wanted to make a shamrock themed “overdress” to go with it. I turned to the Sugar n Spice Dress, and decided to modify the pinafore to get the look of a vest.
I printed a new Sugar n Spice bodice, and on the back, I cut a low, scooped neckline. I put it together following the pattern, and attached the skirt moving the skirt edges in about an inch on each side of the bodice, so the polka dot party dress could be seen underneath. I added a few AD: kam snaps and it was done! I think the overdress could also be worn reversed as well. I don’t know which sleeves I liked better. 🙂

The doll world is falling in love with the newest BeForever character from American Girl, Nanea Mitchell. She lives in Hawaii in the 1940s. You can purchase her fancy Holoku Muumuu dress from American Girl, but she also needs some dresses for every day! This tutorial shows you how to take the Bloomer Buddies pattern and make her a dress for every day!
You will need the Bloomer Buddies pattern, which you can purchase and download in my Etsy Shop by clicking the image below. Cut out the pattern pieces for the dress option with sleeves.
Sewing Pattern Tutorial: Hawaiian MuuMuu Dresses for Dolls
Step 1. Pin your pattern pieces to your fabric. Add one inch to the dress length of both the front and back pieces before you cut them out. Assemble the short sleeve dress according to the pattern instructions, but do not sew the hem. Don’t put any pleats in the sleeves so they have an open look.
Step 2. Cut a strip of fabric, 2 1/2 inches x the width of fabric. (This means your strip will be 40-45 inches long.). Finish one edge with a zigzag stitch or serger, and press up 1/4 inch. Stitch the hem in place.
Step 3. Gather the ruffle’s top, raw edge, and with right sides together, pin, then stitch it to the hem of your dress. Top stitch from the front if you like. Complete the dress as directed by the pattern.
Nanea and Maryellen are ready for some hula lessons! (See how to make Maryellen’s purple muumuu here.)

Can you stand this cuteness? Jaci of JGooseandCo is an amazing seamstress and she really has an eye for photographing her creations. She made this special dress for her Hearts for Hearts doll with the cute little darts in the sleeves. She said she might “draw it in” a bit next time, but H4H dolls are a little smaller than WellieWishers, so that is something you would need to check as you sew if you are sewing for these dolls instead. Thanks Jaci, for such a beautiful rendition of my pattern. Check out her Etsy shop and say “hi”~

Shirley Fomby shared her darling dresses on facebook and I am sharing them here with her permission. Her fabric choices and creative use of the accessory patterns shows you exactly how this pattern was designed…I just love how the colors move through these photos. Shirley, you do beautiful work!! In the middle picture, Shirley also added over-skirts, this time she faced one backwards and added a cute bow accent! The reversible corsets could also be worn alone or with the overskirts. And finally, here at the bottom, the Sugar n Spice dress with a sweet pinafore for a basic look. I love the rick rac trim on the green pinafore!! So sweet, Shirley!! Thanks again for sharing your handiwork!
Do the girls in your life like to match their dolls? My daughter did for years…even her Halloween costumes had to match. Here’s a few of our favorites from over the years.
Matching Halloween Costumes for Girls and Dolls
Super Molly – this one was pretty simple. I simply had to make a tee shirt (like the Simple, Sweet Tee), a mask, and a cape for Molly…she used a pink and black tutu she already had. We decided on colors and a theme, and I used the tutorial in this post here. It’s been a few years, but I did use the printable masks and simply shrink it down until it was doll sized. With a little bit of heat and bond, you can easily add a custom logo to a tee shirt and cape- you don’t even have to sew it. Simply follow Megan’s no fail methods for perfect results.
Make a doll sized Halloween Costume to match your little angel.
Tutu Cute Angel – another super, easy costume…I (maybe you notice a theme here?) I purchased the tutu and the wings at the party store, and created the corset myself. This angel corset was a prequel to my newest pattern, “Sugar n Spice and Everything Nice”, which has instructions for both a corset and a tutu, which are worn over the doll’s clothes (or dress in the case of my pattern.) . See more about the Sugar n Spice pattern here and here.
Little Orphan Annie – I made these dresses for “Character Day” at school. The public school system is not allowed to endorse “Halloween” (nor Christmas actually…so the entire winter chorus concert had songs about the Winter Solstice”.) I used a pattern making software program to create the dress. I’m not even sure which one it was, but it was very clunky and I don’t remember going back into it after this. If I was going to make it again, I would use the Sugar n Spice pattern with a Sixth Grade Skirt attached to it to create the A line look. The sparkle fabric gives it a little bit of a modern touch. I don’t think Little Orphan Annie wore glitter. 😉 . We completed the look with Molly’s Irish dance wig.
Molly and her dolls don’t dress alike any more, boo hoo, so I encourage you to enjoy the tradition while it lasts in your house. Click here to see more Halloween costume ideas and be sure to visit the INSPIRATION GALLERY to get more Halloween ideas for dolls.

My Oh Sew Kat! Testers loved this simple little “go anywhere do everything” play dress for the WellieWishers 14.5 inch dolls by American Girl.®. Enjoy some of their handiwork!

I have just listed my latest pattern, Sugar n Spice & Everything Nice, in my ETSY Shop and you can find it on Pixie Faire. It is now available in 3 sizes: for Wellie Wishers, 18 inch dolls, and Disney Animator dolls. Oh wow, am I in love with this pattern. Talk about the only doll pattern you may ever need! Not only does every doll need a “go to” basic dress…, but when you can turn it into a dress up wardrobe with just a little effort, really, what’s not to love!!
With two sleeve options (really 3!) the Sugar n Spice Dress can stand all on its own!! But read on, because you probably want to save a few $$ and get the pattern bundle! The puffed sleeve looks so sweet with a cute little dart…the perfect place for a little button or bow accent, as you can see below on Camille’s pink dress. For Willa’s green dress, I left the dart out and made an bell-ish sleeve. (Kendall’s dress also has the sleeve dart.)
Sugar n Spice also comes with a sweet and simple BONUS apron. Below, I took some eyelet trim, and cut off the top, gathered edge. Then I regathered it myself (is that a word?) to make this adorable look!
New Sewing Pattern for 14.5 inch doll dress- Sugar n Spice and Evertything Nice
Does Sugar n Spice work for Hearts for Hearts dolls? Sure!!! I like a loose fit on my dolls, and H4H are a little smaller around the middle, so before you stitch the velcro, (or maybe before you add the skirt if you really like a fitted look!) you should measure and test the fit on your own doll. But yes, it can work.
Okay, so as cute as the dress is…and it is cute!! You will want it for your doll closet simply because it’s such a great “go to for anything” dress…but wait!! There’s more!!! (All this…and it’s a BED!! LOL, okay, it’s not also a bed; that is totally an inside family joke…maybe my VT son is reading this…at least he will get it! But apparently, in Sweden, there are some pieces of furniture that act as beds and so much more..and I mean soooo much…maybe we shouldn’t believe everything we read on the internet? 😉
Make an easy doll dress for WellieWishers dolls with the Sugar n Spice Pattern from Oh Sew Kat!
Now it’s time to take the basic dress (Sew it up in a few basic colors…and see where you end up!) and add a few “simple to make” accessories…a corset, a tutu, an over skirt (pulled up to peplums or not), or a cape….Like this…I sewed the green dress to give me a basic work piece…then I found some shamrock buttons…and off I go…
And then I kept going…mixing and matching the pieces I had sewn, maybe adding one or two more as inspiration hit…but all of these designs an be created from the same basic pieces…sewn in a coordinating color palette (think holidays!!!) and create all these looks…plus how many more?
So now are you ready? Click here to go to my ETSY shop and download your Sugar n Spice bundle, which includes the dress, the pinafore, plus 5 easy accessories, and share your outfits online with hashtag #ohsewkat.
