A few of my Favorite Things. Must have sewing notions and tools.

A new year is here!! It’s time to clean up the sewing area and start brainstorming projects for 2019.  Before I dive into another fresh year of sewing, I like to share my annual 5 latest “must have” tools and notions for doll clothes sewing (or any sewing really!)  These simple tools can make sewing smaller doll clothes a little easier and you can find all of them on Amazon.  Click here to see my list from last year, and here to see my list from 2017.

1. Patty Young’s Turn n More Tool by Riley Blake

This brand new tool, made by Patty Young, is a game changer for doll clothes. I LOVE THIS TOOL.  In a facebook group one day, Patty asked what tools we would like to see made that had her fabric designs on them.  I suggested a gripping, foreceps type of tool and she not only picked my idea, she sent me one when it was actually produced about a year later! This handy tool is well worth the wait, and also the price tag (about $12). You will use it for all sorts of things- mostly to pull that slipped elastic back out of the casing, or to turn a tiny doll bodice right side out after you sew it together with just one little pull.

2.  Travel Size Craft Iron

This little tiny iron really packs some punch for the price. It gets super hot, has a steam option, and doesn’t turn off by itself (which is an advantage and disadvantage for sure!). I first used one at a sewing retreat a few years back. We plugged it in and left it on all week long.  Lightweight and tiny, it got the job done and is a perfect companion to your doll clothes sewing tools. I think the difference from some others on the market is that it’s a travel iron not a craft iron.

3.  KAI Dressmaking Shears

Everyone needs a pair of nice, sharp, high quality fabric scissors. You know the ones- the ones that you lock up yourself each night or threaten bodily harm to anyone found using them for anything other than fabric?  I started using KAI scissors with my paper crafting.  Strong and sharp, I found a pair that was a bit shorter and they are my go to for all of my fabric cutting.  I own three pairs!

4.  Ruffler foot attachment for my sewing machine

I know I’ve mentioned this little gadget before, but yes, this year, my ruffler foot is on my top five list.  It’s just so quick to gather up a doll skirt (like 15 seconds quick!) that is really pays for itself over and over.  I’ve kept a spreadsheet of some of my common skirt length settings (to make the skirt match up with the bodice for example) so I don’t have to figure it out each time.  This foot is also great for the popular ruffled sleeves too, and makes putting a ruffle on a full skirt a breeze!  Be sure to get the one that is correct for your specific sewing machine make and model.

5. Omnigrid 4×8 inch Ruler

I believe I have an omnigrid ruler in every size they make- from 1 x6 all the way up to 24 x 24 inches.  However, even with multiple rulers right at my finger tips, this 4×8 inch one is the perfect size for so many of my doll clothes needs.  It’s easy to use to extend a pattern (make pants from shorts, or long sleeves from short sleeves for example) or for cutting straps, waistbands, and skirts with my rotary cutter.  Keep this handy ruler right next to your work area.

The cricut maker, their newest “power e-cutter machine” has a special rotary cutting blade that will cut your fabric for smaller projects.  With a subscription to cricut access, you will have a whole library of patterns and designs that you can make with this new, powerful machine.  I love my cricut maker.  I use it all the time to cut out my doll clothes.   You can find a basic tutorial how to that here.

It’s hard to find good fabric with the right, small scale for doll clothes.  Because cricut projects need to fit on a 12×24 mat to be cut out, they offer a large selection of beautiful, small scale fabrics.  These gorgeous stripes, a collection by Riley Blake, could not be a more perfect scale for doll sized clothing.  This is a great basic package to have on hand for many of your special projects.  Here you can see the scale of the stripes with an 18 inch doll.

I purchased the 10 inch squares (four of each color) and the fat quarter package (two of each color), but they offer strips and smaller, charm squares as well, as well as many other patterns.  The quality is exactly what I expect from Riley Blake or any high end quilt shop.

Cricut fabric collections are perfect for all of your fat quarter and small sized fabric crafts.

A few of my Favorite Things. Must have sewing notions and tools to make doll clothes.

It’s hard to believe we are changing the calendar again! Keep a few of these must have sewing notions handy when you are sewing doll clothes.

1. Wooden Iron.

I bought mine at a craft fair or quilt expo a long time ago. It’s so much easier for pressing open small seams (like doll shoulder bodices in the Popsicle Top or Sunshine Dress for example) rather than getting up and going over to the iron.  This link has a similar one.  It really is just a piece of wood with a slanted edge, that gets smoother the more you use it. I reach for mine every time I sew.

2.  Seam Gauge.

I picked this little gadget up in my local sewing store, and it was made by Bernina, which only means that I paid three times as much as this one on Amazon.  This little piece of metal is easy to use, and is a quick way to check your seams and hems, as well as the back facings (before you add hook and loop tape to a doll dress for example).  Any time your garment doesn’t fit just right, this is the fastest way to check to see if any of your seams were off.  I also use this to check how much I serge on my edges (and have recently changed from the standard four thread to a narrow three thread for this very reason.)

3.  Wonder Clips.

You will wonder how you survived so long without these!!  Now available in lots of colors and three sizes, these clips are used in my sewing room for all sorts of things!  I use them to clip the pieces of a single pattern together after I print and cut them.  I use them to hold the pieces of  fabric together after I cut them out, like pinning the small pocket pieces for Sandbox Shorts. I use them like pins on side seams and hems.  I use them to hold fabric pieces together while I fit them on a doll. I use them to clip the doll’s hair out of the way or to hold her outfit closed until I add the hook and loop tape.  I use them on a train, and in a box, in a tree and with a fox!  Be sure to stock up on a set or two of small clips and large clips and keep them close at hand.

My favorite tools to make doll clothes sewing easier.

Best sewing notions and tools for sewing doll clothes. Find easy sewing PDF patterns to diy doll clothes from Oh Sew Kat! for popular doll sizes like 18 inch American Girl dolls, wellie wishers dolls and Disney Animators Dolls. #sewingnotions #besttools

4.  Seam Ripper.

Okay, not just any seam ripper.  A super sharp, curved knife type seam ripper.  Like many of you, I have about 6 different seam rippers. But I only use one.  It’s long, thin, and super sharp.  It also really helps when you have to remove serger threads.  Go ahead, ask me how I know that one 😉

5.  Washi Tape

I love washi tape. Something about the lightness, and the pretty colors just add that small element of fun.  In addition to using it to brighten up my weekly paper planner, I keep a few rolls on my sewing table and grab it for all sorts of things.  Sometimes, a pattern will use the same piece for a top and for a dress, or for dresses in different lengths, like Bloomer Buddies.  Once I cut the lower hem off, it’s easily reattached with a little pretty, washi tape!  I use it to hold buttons in place while I sew (it peels right out when you are done!) and if I need a seam guide reminder on my sewing machine.  When I go to a sewing class or on a sewing retreat, I mark my tools with the same color of washi to easily identify what needs to come back home with me.  My very favorite way I use washi tape is to add a little tape to any piece I want to mark either the right side (ie batiks) or to keep a front and back straight (when making a solid color bodice for example).  Nowadays, you can find washi tape in so many stores (craft stores, dollar stores, office supply stores), or choose a variety set like this one.

Fasturns: My Favorite Sewing Turning Tool – The Easy Way to Flip Your Fabric When you Sew Your Doll Clothes

**Affiliate links.

If you’ve done very much sewing for our small vinyl friends (aka dolls), you have run across a pattern or two that asks you to turn something inside out. I do it all the time in my patterns!  The clean finish you get from a fully lined bodice gives your doll clothes a more realistic and finished look. And usually, the pieces you need to turn are the straps, like in the HalterAlls, Boardwalk Boutique, Easy Up! or Backyard Bibs patterns. Maybe you are looking at tiny shoulders for a bodice, like the Popsicle Top or Bloomer Buddies, esp. for smaller dolls. And you look at that tiny little piece you so lovingly cut from the special fabric and think, “Huh? Seriously?”  I want to share one of my favorite products with you, as well as show you, step by step, how to use it.

Best sewing notions for doll clothes: Fasturn tubes for flipping straps and doll bodices. Easy tutorial by Oh Sew Kat! Visit to also find a free skirt pattern for 18 inch doll. #ohsewkat #tutorial #sewingnotions #turningtool

Use Fasturns as a tool to flip a small, doll bodice or small doll clothes straps.

You can easily use a safety pin to flip any small part of your pattern. Or you can add a ribbon or string as you sew, and then pull it to flip it right side out. These turning tubes also work great! There are so many ways to try to see what works for you. But I definitely have my favorite. I bought them in 1996 and they never let me down. I use them EVERY. SINGLE. TIME I turn a strap, tube, bodice etc. They are quick, they are easy, and they are worth every. single. penny. I promise!!!!! I love my FASTURN TUBES!! You can find them on amazon.

Introducing:  Fasturn Fabric Turners!.  This set, available on Amazon, is basically the same one I have. I bought it at least 19 years ago.  I love these things!! I think I bought them at the time for two reasons- I love sewing gadgets, and I thought I might be making purses. 🙂 Today, I use them daily when I sew; I honestly would be lost without them!  I use them to turn the straps on Boardwalk Boutique halter tops and HalterAlls, and Backyard Bibs. I use them every time I make a Popsicle Top, a Sugar n Spice pinafore, or a Bloomer Buddies top.  If you make the investment in these, you won’t regret it!  No more safety pins, ripped seams, and frayed edges! I promise!

Here’s what they look like: (Mine are from about 1995 or 1996 (based on the fact that I bought them in California, and son #2 was born in Virginia in 1997 so it’s a pretty good guess…) and they are still going strong because they are such high quality. Yes, they are expensive. But if you plan to sew a lot of doll clothes, you really will not regret it.

Fasturn tutorial by Oh Sew kat! doll clothes

Sure, they don’t look like much. Brass tubes and some wire “thingy”s; okay, wire hooks if you will.  They come in sets of three or six sizes.  Here’s a step by step break down of how to use them to turn a doll’s bodice (like Bloomer Buddies, Sugar n Spice, Popsicle Top etc.) or turning a doll strap like Easy Up!, Backyard Bibs, or HalterAlls especially for smaller dolls. The smaller the doll size, the harder it is to turn the bodice or strap.  Instructions are beneath each set of pictures.  (Please note, these photos were taken of a 14 inch doll sized WellieWishers™ top.) . The steps match the photo numbers.

Fasturn Tutorial by Oh Sew Kat!

1. Stitch the neckline and arm holes as the pattern directs.

2. Choose the largest Fasturn tube that will easily slide into the opening or strap.

3. Insert the Fasturn into your opening so it comes out the other side.

4. Feed a wire hook into the tube (make sure it’s longer than your tube is- there are two sizes of hooks) and fold the end of the fabric over the opening in a single layer, turning the wire in a clockwise direction to “screw” it out the top through your fabric.  The fabric is now hooked.

5. Ensure the top of the wire doesn’t catch on the side of the tube, (I guide it with my finger as I start to pull) and slowly pull the fabric into the tube, pulling gently towards you.

Fasturns 2

6.  As you pull, the fabric will start to feed into the tube and resist a bit.  Pull about 1-2 inches (until it feels like you may be forcing it) and then pull your fabric back up over the tube (right side out) to expose the part you are pulling out.  (Note, most straps will simply turn right side out as you continue to pull.)

7.  Now you can see what you are doing more clearly;  pull the tube towards you and away from your fabric. (the hook is still secured to the fabric.)

8.  Turn the wire in a counter-clockwise direction to twist it out of your fabric.

9.  Carefully continue to pull with your hands.

10.  Continue to pull the fabric until it all slides out towards you.

Fasturns 3

11.  Pull the final fabric through and… ta da!!

12.  Press your flipped fabric!  Whoo hoo! Wasn’t that so much easier?

How to flip a doll clothes bodice or small doll clothes straps with the easy to use, FASTURN tool.

You can also view a quick video on YOU TUBE, that shows how to turn a tube, and fill it with cord in just one step.  Have you bought a set of Fasturns? How do you use them? Respond in the comments below and share your ideas!

A new year is here!! 1. Bodkin.

The tool I reach for more than any other, is a plain, old simple bodkin.  This one is my favorite.  It’s the best tool to use with those tiny pieces of thin elastic in doll sleeves and waistbands such as Playtime Peasant skirts and tops.  I keep two on hand at all times.  (I also use either end to poke out seams, corners, and collars.)

2.  FasTurns

I have had this set of FastTurns for years–probably 20 years at least.  They come in a set of multiple sizes and are sturdy to last a long time. I use these nearly every time I sew. I use them for obvious turning tasks, like straps, belts, key layards, headbands…but I also reach for them every time I make a lined bodice (like my Popsicle Top or Sugar n Spice Pinafore pattern).  These little wire twisty gripper things make an otherwise tedious task of flipping a bodice inside out a breeze.  I especially like them for the smaller clothes for the Hearts for Hearts dolls and WellieWishers.

3.  Purple Thang

This one is just cute.  The Purple Thang is handy for tiny collars and seams and for getting down into tiny points of doll clothes.  It’s not a huge investment, but one you will not regret.  I use it a lot when adding pockets to Sandbox Shorts.

I’m not sure if we can consider this a sewing tool, but I always make sure my sewing space has a good stock of Scotch Magic Tape. This tape is easy to remove and I use it often to hold small lace and trims in place, and when installing zippers.

5.  5 in 1 Sliding Hem Gauge

This is a fancy name for a very useful tool, the Clover Sliding Gauge .   This handy tool is adjustable and works great in the sewing room and for paper crafting. Use it to check and mark hems, sleeve casings, and so much more.
